Planned roadworks in the North West

Weekly summary for Monday 14 – Sunday 20 October 2013

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 11 October but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Junction 27 Wigan to Junction 26 Skelmersdale

The southbound side of the M6 between Junctions 27 and 26 will be closed overnight from 10pm on Saturday 19 October until 9am on the following morning for maintenance work on Gathurst Viaduct. A diversion will be in place.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by February 2014

 M55 Junction 1 Broughton

Junction 1 of the M55 will be closed overnight for three consecutive nights from Monday 14 October. Partial closures of the roundabout by the junction will also be taking place overnight on Thursday 17, Friday 18, Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 October with some impact for motorway users. Lancashire County Council is carrying out improvement work at the roundabout linking Junction 1 of the M55 with the A6 at Broughton to reduce delays at one of Preston’s worst congestion hotspots. The scheme will widen the junctions with the A6, add traffic controls to all junctions, and make it safer to use for pedestrians and cyclists by installing new crossings while retaining the existing subways. The work is expected to be completed by December, and diversions will be in place when roads are closed.

 M57 Junction 1 Huyton

A short section of the M57 will close every weekend for up to eight weeks from Friday 20 September to allow Knowsley Council to carry out work on the A5300 Knowsley Expressway towards Speke and Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The southbound link road from the M57 onto the Expressway, south of Tarbock Island interchange where junction 1 of the M57 meets junction 6 of the M62, will be closed each weekend. The weekend closures will start at 10pm each Friday and last until 6am on the following Monday morning, with work expected to be completed by Monday 11 November. A diversion will be in place.

M60 Junction 11 Irlam

Maintenance work is being carried out at Junction 11 of the M60 which will require some slip roads to be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am. The project is due to be completed by Saturday 30 November. Diversions will be in place when slip roads are closed.

M60 Junction 25 Bredbury to Junction 1 Stockport

Overnight maintenance work is being carried out on both sides of the M60 between Junctions 25 and 1, which includes drainage work, improvements to junction signs and resurfacing. The work will take place between 10pm and 5am during weekdays and between 10pm and 7am at weekends, and will require some lane and slip road closures. It is due to be completed by Monday 16 December, and diversions will be in place when slip roads are closed.

A585 Thornton Cleveleys

Temporary traffic lights will be in place on the section of the A585 between West Drive and Bourne Way between 9am and 4pm from Monday 14 until Tuesday 22 October.

A590 Lindale

Work is underway to repair and improve drainage along the A590 around Lindale in Cumbria. The project will involve single lane closures of the dual carriageway for just over a mile, and is due to be completed by Friday 20 December. A 50mph speed limit will be in place when lanes are closed.

A590 / A5092 Greenodd

Work is taking place to build a new roundabout linking the A590 to the A5092 at Greenodd, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving safety. The A590 currently forms a T-junction with the A5092, with traffic having to pull into a gap in the central reservation to turn right towards Ulverston. The first phase of work involves building up the land around the junction ahead of construction work on the roundabout itself starting in the autumn. The project is due to be completed by February 2014.

Kingsway Tunnel, Merseyside

Merseytravel will be closing Kingsway Tunnel – which runs between Liverpool and the Wirral peninsula – for four consecutive Sunday nights from Sunday 22 September for essential maintenance work. Most drivers will be able to use Queensway Tunnel during the closures, although lorries will be diverted on the M56 as the tunnel is not suitable for heavy goods vehicles. The closure will take place between 8pm and 5am on each Sunday night until Monday 14 October.
