Planned roadworks in the North West

Weekly summary for Monday 12 – Sunday 18 August

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 9 August but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

M6 Knutsford Services and Junction 19 Knutsford

The northbound entry and exit slip roads to Knutsford Services, and the northbound exit slip road at Junction 19, will be closed overnight for maintenance work from 10pm on Wednesday 14 August until 5am on Thursday 15 August.

M6 Junction 38 Tebay

A contraflow system is in place on the M6 near Junction 38 at Tebay as part of a major refurbishment of a motorway bridge which carries the M6 over the River Lune. Southbound traffic will be directed into lanes on the northbound carriageway while the bridge is closed for the repairs. Two lanes will run in each direction and a 40mph speed limit will be in place. The project is due to be completed by February 2014

M53 Junction 3 Heswall to Junction 4 Clatterbridge
The M53 will be closed overnight for resurfacing work between Junctions 4 and 3 from Tuesday until Thursday 22 August. The work will take place between 10pm and 5am and a diversion will be in place.

M53 Junction 8 Ellesmere Port

The entry and exit slip roads at Junction 8 of the M53 will be closed between 6am and 10am on Sunday 18 August to allow an abnormal load onto the motorway. A diversion will be in place.

M55 Broughton Roundabout

Lancashire County Council is carrying out improvement work at the roundabout linking Junction 1 of the M55 with the A6 at Broughton to reduce delays at one of Preston’s worst congestion hotspots. The scheme will widen the junctions with the A6, add traffic controls to all junctions, and make it safer to use for pedestrians and cyclists by installing new crossings while retaining the existing subways. The work is expected to be completed by December.

M55 Junction 1 Broughton

Work is being carried out to upgrade safety barriers and lighting along a section of the M55 near Broughton, and is due to be completed by Thursday 22 August. During the day, the hard shoulder and lane one of the entry slip road will be closed, with the slip road closed entirely between 8pm and 6am. A diversion will be in place.

M55 Junction 4 Blackpool

Resurfacing of the eastbound carriageway around Junction 4 of the M55 is being carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am. Traffic will still be able to use lane three of carriageway or the hard shoulder. The work also includes one day-long closure of lane one of the carriageway on Wednesday 14 August.  The project is due to be completed by Monday 19 August.

M56 Junctions 1 with M60 to 3, Baguley, South Manchester

A maintenance and repair project is taking place on a motorway bridge over a railway line in South Manchester. The eight-month scheme to repair the bridge – which carries the M56 Sharston Link over the Cheadle Branch railway line – is due to be completed by October. It involves replacing the existing parapets, repairing abutments, installing new expansion joints and bearings maintenance. Drivers are being advised that both the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the M56 between Junction 1 with the M60 and Junction 3 at Baguley, as well as junction slip roads, will be closed overnight, from 9pm until 5am, to allow the work to be carried out safely. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place when the road is closed.

M60 Junction 11 Irlam

Maintenance work is being carried out at Junction 11 of the M60 which will require some slip roads to be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am. The project is due to start on Monday 12 August and to be completed by Saturday 30 November. Diversions will be in place when slip roads are closed.

M62 Junction 20 Oldham and Rochdale

Work is taking place to upgrade lighting and safety barriers around Junction 20 of the M62 at the interchange with the A627(M). The three-month project is due to be completed by Friday 30 August, ahead of the August bank holiday weekend. Some overnight closures of the eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads will be needed to allow the work to be done safely. Traffic will be diverted to Junction 19 when the slip roads are closed.

A590 / A5092 Greenodd

Work is taking place to build a new roundabout linking the A590 to the A5092 at Greenodd, with the aim of reducing congestion and improving safety. The A590 currently forms a T-junction with the A5092, with traffic having to pull into a gap in the central reservation to turn right towards Ulverston. The first phase of work involves building up the land around the junction ahead of construction work on the roundabout itself starting in the autumn. The project is due to be completed by February 2014.

A595 Blackbeck to Calderbridge

Temporary traffic lights will be in place while maintenance work is carried out on the A595 between 8am and 4pm on Sunday 11 August and Sunday 18 August.

A595 Whitehaven

Temporary traffic lights will be in place while maintenance work is carried out on the A595 at the junction with the A5094 near Whitehaven. One lane will be closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 August, with vehicles taking it in turns to travel through the roadworks.

– Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.

– Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.

– Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

– Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

– Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.

– Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
