Northern Quarter celebrity backed hair salon takes fund to £1m

The Manchester Business Loans, a £24m fund designed to help businesses across Greater Manchester to find finance and grow, has awarded £1m in business loans by helping customers directly referred by banks since the fund launched in April this year.

The government-backed initiative is managed by Business Finance Solutions (BFS) and has reached the £1m milestone with the most recent loan of £30k to a Northern Quarter hair salon, Rob Czlapka Salons Ltd, a start up business that was introduced to BFS by NatWest.

MBS Picture1 redThe salon on Hilton Street, run by Director Rob Czlapka (pictured right), is the first Adee Phelan franchised salon to launch in Manchester and will create six new full time jobs when it opens in May.  The salon is run as an Adee Phelan franchise, the celebrity hairdresser who shot to fame after creating David Beckham’s World Cup Mohawk hairstyle in 2002.  Adee was also the subject of a Channel 4 documentary series The Salon and now runs a successful chain of hairdressing salons and photography studios.

Rob, who lives in Media City, says: “When I was looking to set up my own salon, the opportunity to open the first Adee Phelan franchised salon in Manchester was one I just couldn’t resist.  With ten years experience myself and some of the best hairdressers in the city working with me, opening as a franchise allows me to bring to Manchester the excellence and innovation that Adee has become world famous for.

“We needed extra financing to make sure we had the very latest equipment and products that we and our clients demand and the Manchester Business Loan of £30k has enabled us to do just that. There are so many negative stories out there about businesses not being able to get finance so it was great to be able to go to NatWest and get a referral on to the right people at BFS who were able to really help us to set up a business that is already employing several staff and helping to generate revenue for the city.”

The total investment in the Rob Czlapka salon will be £75k, with the additional £45k being contributed by Rob and stocking loans via Wella hair supplies.

Paul Breen, Director of Business Finance Solutions, which is delivering the Loans in Greater Manchester, said:  “Rob’s salon is a great example of a strong business concept that offers something really new and original. Before he has even opened his doors Rob has created six jobs and has the backing of one of the most famous names in his industry to help him.  It shows just how well the public and private sector can work together to support business and we’re delighted that our relationship with NatWest is enabling us to get businesses like this off the ground. NatWest are to be applauded for their commitment in actively helping businesses find public loan support through their partnership with BFS.”

Peter Richardson, Regional Director NatWest Business Banking said, “We have developed a close working relationship with Business Financial Solutions which allows us to offer our customers additional support in order to grow their business and help create jobs in the Greater Manchester Region.”
