ONGOING SCHEMES

M60 Junctions 4 to 2 South Manchester

A major project is underway between Junctions 4 and 2 of the M60 and along the A34 to reduce congestion and improve safety. Various traffic restrictions are currently in place including daytime hard shoulder closures along the M60 anti-clockwise for 2 miles, and a 50mph speed limit through narrowed lanes. There will also be some overnight closures during the project, which will be in place from 9pm to 5am weekdays, and 9pm to 7am at weekends. The closures will affect:

  • M56 eastbound between Junctions 3 and 1
  • M60 anticlockwise between Junctions 5 and 3
  • The entry slip road from the northbound A34 onto the anti-clockwise M60 at Junction 3
  • M60 Junction 3 anti-clockwise exit slip road onto the southbound A34
  • M60 Junction 3 clockwise exit slip road which merges with the anti-clockwise exit slip road before meeting the southbound A34

Work is due to be completed by mid-December.

A590 Dalton-in-Furness to Ulverston

Work is taking place to reduce the risk of flooding along a three-mile section of the A590 between Dalton-in-Furness and Ulverston. Some of the work will require lane closures along short sections with temporary traffic lights in place to guide motorists through the roadworks. The project is due to be completed by Sunday 27 January.

A590 Newby Bridge to Backbarrow

A project is taking place to fit netting to the rockface next to the westbound side of the A590. The work is being carried out during off-peak times from 9.30am to 3.30pm, and from 8pm to 6am, and requires the closure of the inside lane along a half-mile section of the dual carriageway. It should be completed by mid December.

A66 Hutton Moor to Lowside

There will be 24 hour traffic signals in place for repair to the carriageway.  The work will be completed by Tuesday 18 December.

A66 Beckes Junction to Highgate

There will be 24 hour traffic signals in place for repair to the carriageway.  The work will be completed by Thursday 20 December.

WORK OFF THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY NETWORK WHICH MAY AFFECT HIGHWAYS AGENCY CUSTOMERS

M6 Junction 31

Drivers are warned of possible delays in the Fulwood area of Preston around the M6 Junction 31a as two extra lanes are added to the motorway slip road, which takes traffic from the motorway onto Bluebell Way. Traffic signals will also be added to the roundabout. The work is being carried out by the council on behalf of the Homes and Communities Agency and is due to be completed by 19 January 2013.

Further Information

Real-time traffic information for England's motorways and major A roads is available:

– From the web at or if using a phone or mobile device.

Before using any mobile, find a safe place to park. Never stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency. Make sure it's safe and legal before you call.

– By phone from the Highways Agency 24-hour voice activated phone service on 08700 660 115. (Calls from BT residential landlines to 0870 numbers will cost no more than 8p per minute; call charges from other landlines and mobile networks may vary).

Safety at roadworks

The Highways Agency is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

– Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.

– Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.

– Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

– Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

– Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.

– Observe all signs – they are there to help you.
