North West Roadworks Update

Weekly summary of roadworks in the North West  

Monday 29 October to Friday 2 November 2012

Please note: There may be heavy traffic around the M6 Junction 32 and M55 due to the Blackpool Illuminations until Sunday 4 November


A585, Thornton-Cleveleys

Routine maintenance at a roundabout on the A585 at Thornton-Cleveleys is due to begin on Monday 29 October. The project includes repairing potholes and repainting road markings on the approaches to the roundabout at the junction with the B5412 Victoria Road. No lane or carriageway closures will be required as all the work will be carried out using narrowed lanes, and will take place overnight between 7pm and 6am. It is due to be completed by Friday 2 November.

A590 Levens Bridge

Daytime lane closures will be in place on Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 October while examination work is carried out on a railway bridge. The work will take place between 8.30am and 3.30pm each day.


M6, Junction 20 to 20a Lymm

A project is taking place to provide safer and smoother access from the southbound side of the M6 onto the M56 at Lymm Interchange. Junction 20 will be closed overnight along with lane closures on the southbound side of the M6 ahead of Junction 20a. The work is being carried out between 10pm and 5am each night, and is due to be completed by Thursday 8 November. Diversions will be in place when the junction is closed.

M6, Junction 21a Birchwood

Overnight work to resurface the exit slip roads at Junction 21a of the M6, which lead to the westbound side of the M62, is taking place until mid-November. The work is being carried out between 10pm and 5am and diversions will be in place when the slip roads are closed.

M60 Junctions 4 to 2 South Manchester

A major project is underway between Junctions 4 and 2 of the M60 and along the A34 to reduce congestion and improve safety. Various traffic restrictions are currently in place including daytime hard shoulder closures along the M60 anti-clockwise for 2 miles, and a 50mph speed limit through narrowed lanes. There will also be some overnight closures during the project, which will be in place from 9pm to 5am weekdays, and 9pm to 7am at weekends. The closures will affect:

  • M56 eastbound between Junctions 3 and 1
  • M60 anticlockwise between Junctions 5 and 3
  • The entry slip road from the northbound A34 onto the anti-clockwise M60 at Junction 3
  • M60 Junction 3 anti-clockwise exit slip road onto the southbound A34
  • M60 Junction 3 clockwise exit slip road which merges with the anti-clockwise exit slip road before meeting the southbound A34

Work is expected to be completed by Thursday 15 November.

A66, Brougham Bridges

There are 24 hour lane closures in place for bridge maintenance work. The work is due to be completed by the end of October.

A66 Sandford to Warcop

Temporary traffic lights are in use between 9.30am and 3.30pm and between 8pm and 6am while the safety barrier in replace. The work is due to be completed by Sunday 11 November.

A66 Dubwath to Thornthwaite

There are 24 hour lane closures in place with temporary traffic lights while work is carried out to improve drainage. It is due to be completed by Friday 23 November.


M6 Junction 31

Drivers are warned of possible delays in the Fulwood area of Preston around the M6 Junction 31a as two extra lanes are added to the motorway slip road, which takes traffic from the motorway onto Bluebell Way. Traffic signals will also be added to the roundabout. The work is being carried out by the council on behalf of the Homes and Communities Agency.
