Acas issues guidance around holiday rights as summer requests hot up

July 26th, 2010

acasAcas, the employment relations service, is reminding employers of the workplace rights around annual leave and flexible working as the schools break for the holiday season and there are more requests for time off.

There were 12.8 million working-age parents in spring 2004 (35 per cent of the working age population).*

The Acas helpline has received over 100,000 calls relating to holidays and Working Time issues in the last year. Questions raised include:

Can an annual leave request be refused?
What is the current annual leave entitlement?
Can a flexible working request cover just the school summer holidays?

John Taylor, Acas Chief Executive said:

“Many businesses receive an increase in holiday requests over the summer and an employer often has to balance the needs of the business with keeping a healthy and motivated workforce. We always encourage employees and employers to plan ahead and be as flexible as possible.”

Acas has issued practical guidance around holiday workplace rights. For further information visit www.acas.org.uk/summer.
