Higher Education Funding Council for England

hefcelogo2Working in partnership, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) promotes and funds high-quality, cost-effective teaching and research, meeting the diverse needs of students, the economy and society.

HEFCE distributes public money for teaching and research to universities and colleges. In doing so, it aims to promote high quality education and research, within a financially healthy sector. The Council also plays a key role in ensuring accountability and promoting good practice.

What HEFCE does:

Distributes money to universities and colleges for higher education teaching, research and related activities

Fund programmes to support the development of higher education

Monitor the financial and managerial health of universities and colleges

Ensure the quality of teaching is assessed

Provide money to further education colleges for their higher education programmes

Provide guidance on good practice.

HEFCE’s Regional Approach

HEFCE works with regional stakeholders to support institutions in making the most effective contribution to their region or area, helping them to meet the needs of that region’s students, economy and civil society. This will also contribute directly to HEFCE’s national strategy.

HEFCE contributes funding to the nine regional associations in England that promote the role of higher education institutions in their areas. The associations place a particular emphasis on fostering collaboration between HEIs, and building partnerships between higher education and other organisations within their regions.
